(You're busy. Here's the whole thing on one screen — the details are below if you want them.)
Our independent math
We never use the bank's marketing numbers. This is our own conservative valuation (≈ 1.5¢ per VIPorter point) — so you know whether you REALLY have a good deal.

"But $18,000 in spending?!"
This bonus is built in 3 separate parts. Each one you unlock is yours to keep — so you can aim for the level that fits your real spending (no all-or-nothing pressure).
20,000 bonus pts + ≈ 10,000 earned = ≈ $450 in value
+20,000 bonus pts + earn = ≈ $870 total
+30,000 bonus pts + earn = ≈ $1,590 total
$18,000 in 12 months is $1,500/month — groceries, gas, restaurants, bills, that hotel you were booking anyway. For a 2-person household, it's $750/month each by simply putting ALL spending on one card.
Beyond the bonus
The card gives you VIPorter Venture elite status automatically (no flying requirement). If you fly Porter even a few times a year, these alone make the card worth a look:
On Porter flights — for you and up to 8 travel companions on the same booking.
On all Porter fare types — for you and up to 8 companions on the same booking.
Standard seats, free — for you and up to 8 companions on the same booking.
Priority check-in, security lines, and early boarding when flying Porter.
Priority rebooking and customer service in disrupted flight situations.
6 pts/$ on Porter flights via the VIPorter program (instead of 5) — on top of your card points.
$10 monthly Instacart credit and 6 months of Instacart+ (enrollment required).
Up to 20% at National and Alamo, up to 5% at Enterprise (certain locations), and up to 7% on prepaid Booking.com stays via the Mastercard platform.
Discounts on shows, restaurants, services, and products in Canada and abroad.
Peace of mind
Telling you the gaps too is kind of our whole thing.
After the bonus
| Category | Earn rate | Effective return (at our valuation) |
|---|---|---|
| Porter purchases Annual cap of $20,000 (then 1 pt/$) | 3 pts/$ | ≈ 4.5% |
| Groceries, restaurants, hotels, gas & transportation Caps: $10,000 groceries/restaurants · $5,000 hotels · $5,000 gas/transportation (then 1 pt/$). Tip: gift card displays in grocery stores = 2 pts/$ at almost any retailer, indirectly. | 2 pts/$ | ≈ 3.0% |
| Everywhere else | 1 pt/$ | ≈ 1.5% |
Full transparency
No card is perfect. Here's what to know BEFORE you apply, cheerfully disclosed as always:
Step by step, concretely
Takes a few minutes. You need a minimum income of $80,000 (personal) OR $150,000 (household), and a Good or Excellent credit score.
Spend $5,000 within 110 days to unlock the 1st part of the bonus (20,000 pts). Then $4,000 more within 180 days for part 2, and $9,000 more within 365 days for the full 70,000 pts.
A few clicks. Your points land there, and they never expire as long as you have the card.
Pick ANY flight on Porter (or specific Air Transat flights) and apply your points like a discount. That's it — simple points, remember?
Before you apply, grab Flytrippers' free new-card checklist — it includes very important mistakes to avoid. (It opens in a separate tab so you don't lose this page.)
Good questions
You must not have already had this specific card — and since it's brand new, almost everyone is eligible. Card eligibility: minimum income of $80,000 personal OR $150,000 household, age of majority in your province, and an estimated Good or Excellent credit score (BMO checks Equifax Canada).
Our Flytrippers Valuation is ≈ 1.5¢ per point. They're points of the more simple type: the amount needed is mostly tied to the cash price of the flight, so the value doesn't vary much — and ALL Porter seats are available. For example: 25,000 pts ≈ a $375 discount, 50,000 pts ≈ $750, and your full 106,000 pts ≈ $1,590.
Points never expire as long as you have the card, so you can bank them for the right trip. You can also redeem on specific Air Transat flights (with more partners coming soon). And even without the card, keeping points alive is easy: just fly or redeem once per 24 months, or hold the basic-level VIPorter card.
You can pool points with additional ("joint") cards on the same account ($75/year each), and across your own separate cards that earn VIPorter points. You can't pool with travel companions directly — but you can always book flights for whomever you want with your points anyway.
The fee is $0 the 1st year, and the welcome bonus alone is worth ≈ $1,590 — about 8 years of fees. Savvy travelers don't avoid annual fees; they make sure the math beats the fee. Here, it does, by a lot. (And you can always reassess at renewal.)
