Calling all nature enthusiasts! If you are planning to go on a Nordic adventure to one of the “Lands of Vikings”, there is a spectacular spot you must add to your itinerary. Have you ever heard of the massive lake that hangs over a cliff?

Here’s a destination to visit if you’re in this region.

Floating lake of Sørvágsvatn

Trending on social media in the past few months, this “floating lake” is located on Vágar Island, an independent territory belonging to the Kingdom of Denmark and located in the archipelago of the Faroe Islands, about halfway between Denmark and Greenland.

As one of the largest lakes in the Faroe Islands, Sørvágsvatn, also called Leitisvatn, has an area of 3.6 square kilometers, but that’s not what it’s famous for.

This mystical lake almost seems to float above a cliff, and the scenery of this stunning natural phenomenon is truly incredible. It’s no wonder it’s nicknamed the “Lake above the Ocean”.

But is it really floating in the air?

In reality, the lake is at sea level.

In fact, there is an optical illusion when you observe the lake from the Trælanípa cliff, creating the mesmerizing impression of the water being elevated above the surrounding ocean. You might want to take another look at the picture!

How to get to Lake Sørvágsvatn

It’s very simple! Vágar Island, where Lake Sørvágsvatn is located, is the location of the primary airport for flights arriving in the Faroe Islands.

When you arrive at Vágar airport (FAE), head to the lovely village of Miðvágur, it’s just a one-hour hike away from this unique attraction.

The hike is easy and all levels of fitness are welcome.

At the end of your journey, you’ll be rewarded with the stunning Bøsdalafossur waterfall that gracefully cascades from Lake Leitisvatn into the ocean.

And of course, do not miss the views from the Trælanípa cliff.

Throughout every season, this landscape is stunning.

Where to stay near Lake Sørvágsvatn

You’ll find lots of Airbnbs/Vrbos, holiday homes, and guesthouses available on Vágar Island, including typical accommodations of the Faroe Islands.

Miðvágur is a great option as it is very close to the airport and several points of interest.

If you are seeking more affordable accommodation, Giljanes Hostel is ideal for budget travelers and is close to many main attractions and hikes.

For a more comfortable stay, you can choose the lovely Hotel Føroyar located in the capital city of Tórshavn. You’ll be amazed by the design of this chic hotel, especially the natural grass roof matching the surrounding countryside.
