How the best redemptions of Avios points work

The most valuable points like Avios are often very little-know, unfortunately. Avios points are the most complex, and I’ll share a really more detailed guide soon.

But right now, what’s urgent is deciding if you want to transfer your RBC Avion points to Avios points (you have until 11:59 PM Pacific time tonight, or 2:59 AM on the 12th in the Eastern time zone).

So I’ll just show you concrete examples of good redemptions so you can see if it appeals to you. But you need to at least understand the basics.

Here are the basics of all good airline points:

  • They are rewards of the more lucrative type
    • So it’s much less simple
  • They can be worth much more
    • So it’s often necessary to be more flexible (about everything)
  • The value is unlimited
    • The price in points is NOT tied to the cash price
    • It’s a completely SEPARATE booking system
  • Available seats are limited
    • That’s what allows them to offer unlimited value
  • The value varies enormously
    • Depending on how you redeem them
    • There are EXCELLENT redemptions
    • There are TERRIBLE redemptions
  • The value is higher with premium cabin flights
    • But they can also be excellent for economy class
  • Redemptions are possible on the airline and its partners
    • Including its entire alliance (if it’s part of one)
  • Redemptions can differ a little on the airline itself
    • There might be more seats available at a higher price
  • Taxes are not included (AND WHO CARES!!!)
    • These points still save you more
    • What’s important is always the total value!!!
  • Surcharges sometimes exist (hence the terrible redemptions)

It seems complicated, but it’s really not that bad if you invest a little time. And it’s incredibly worth it.

What’s really complicated, though, are Avios points. I have to repeat it: they are really complex on all fronts. That doesn’t mean they don’t offer great redemptions (they do). It just means it’s more complex.

The most important thing to know right now is that the currency is used by 6 different airline rewards programs, which adds more options… but more complexity. And that, generally, you have a lot fewer airline routes you can redeem for. It’s less flexible. All the details soon!

The prices in this guide are in Avios points. So the amount of RBC Avion points you need is 30% lower than these prices until tonight. For example, the flight in the world’s best business class that costs 70,000 Avios points costs just 54,000 RBC Avion points. Prices are one-way, as almost always with airline points. To do a roundtrip, you simply need to multiply by 2!
