You are currently viewing Canadian dollar at par in Las Vegas: Promotion offered by 3 hotels

There’s some good news for Canadians who like Las Vegas: 3 hotels have launched a promotion to accept the Canadian dollar at par. Yes, a 1-to-1 exchange rate as if it were 2011! This gives you a 26% effective discount on your hotel room, your drinks, and even your gambling at slot machines!

If you wanted to go to Vegas anyway, this could be an excellent deal for your lodging. And there’s certainly a nice arbitrage opportunity with the gambling aspect, for those who are good with slot machines…

(Although Vegas can also be a good place to stay in a Marriott hotel for elite status: We’ll have a detailed post Saturday, but there’s a brand-new record-high offer on the only 2 cards that are for every Canadian traveler without exception: the Marriott Bonvoy Amex Card and the Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex Card that does not require having an incorporated business!)

Whether or not you are among the 50,000+ Canadians per day who go to the US, Flytrippers aims to help you travel for less through our 3 types of content, namely flight deals, travel rewards, and tips/inspiration/news.

Here are the details of the Canadian dollar at par promotion in Las Vegas.

What is the Las Vegas Canadian dollar at par promotion?

The Canadian dollar at par promotion is offered by 3 Las Vegas hotels that all offer a 1-to-1 exchange rate from the Canadian dollar to the US dollar.

It applies to hotel rooms and drinks at 1 bar per hotel (no maximum), as well as gambling at slot machines (maximum of US$500… maybe per Canadian ID).

You’ll still pay in US dollars, but they will convert the price as if the Canadian dollar’s value were at par. For absolute clarity, if you take advantage of the hotel that’s at US$64, you’ll pay C$64 (so they’ll bill you US$47).

Your Canadian dollar is worth 1 US dollar, regardless of the exchange rate.

Almost all Canadian credit cards charge a 2.5% foreign transaction fee! That cancels out all your rewards when traveling, so be savvy and make sure you’re paying with a credit card on which you are unlocking a huge welcome bonus (13.3% back with the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, for example) or at the very least with a credit card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees.

What’s included in the Las Vegas Canadian dollar at par promotion?

The 3 parts of the promotion are as follows:

  • Hotels at par
  • Drinks at par
  • Gambling at par (maximum $500 USD)

Hotel nights are the best deal. Getting a 26% discount is not bad at all. You just need to show a Canadian ID, but you do need to book directly through their official website. No promo code is required, no dates are excluded, and there are no restrictive conditions. It’s very generous.

Drinks are a good deal for people who would have paid for drinks. It’s the same principle: no limits, no complications. Just a Canadian ID. Only 1 bar per hotel is included (listed in the next section). But getting free drinks the Las Vegas way (by gambling) might be a better option in this particular case…

Gambling is limited to US$500, so you’ll pay C$500, but you’ll get C$683 (as of today’s rate) to bet on the slot machines only (not at tables). You need to show a Canadian ID (passport, driver’s license, or “government ID), but you could probably create a separate gaming account with each one if you wanted to.

(More on the gambling arbitrage opportunity below, in case you’re interested!)

Which hotels offer the Las Vegas Canadian dollar at par promotion?

The 3 hotels that offer the promotion are located in Downtown Las Vegas (not on the Strip):

You need to book directly, but the link on Trivago is to show you their travelers’ rating (in parentheses). This rating is a good reflection of my perception of these hotels (however, it’s a pretty limited one, as someone who doesn’t like Las Vegas much and hasn’t been that often).

It’s certainly a very low bar, but I do personally find the Downtown area better than the Strip. The Fremont Street Experience pedestrian mall is kind of fun, and at least it’s near the very cool Arts District, which is as close as you’ll get to a more authentic area in Vegas.

Circa Resort & Casino

The Circa Resort & Casino is a 618-room property that was the first new resort downtown in decades when it opened in 2020, and is also the highest building downtown.

It’s known for its iconic Stadium Swim pool area, a massive 6-tiered pool with a capacity of 4,000 people, and a huge 143-foot screen. It’s open year-round!

The lowest price on their official website seems to be US$169 per night, so C$169 with the promotion (just C$84.50 per person per night with a travel companion). Plus taxes, which are rarely displayed in the initial price for hotels (unlike with flights).

The participating venue for the drinks at par promotion is the Overhang Bar.

There are 1350 slot machines.

The D Las Vegas

The D Las Vegas is a 639-room property that was renovated in 2012 and is the 2nd-tallest building downtown, and fittingly features a Canadian-themed sportsbook and sports bar.

It’s known for having the world’s largest Keno Board, Nevada’s longest bar (just under 100 feet long), Vegas’ last remaining vintage Sigma Derby game (an electro-mechanical horse race), and LED decor designed by a former Cirque du Soleil producer.

The lowest price on their official website seems to be US$68.95 per night, so C$68.95 with the promotion (just C$34.48 per person per night with a travel companion). Plus tax.

The participating venue for the drinks at par promotion is the BarCanada (of course).

There are 1000 slot machines.

Golden Gate Hotel & Casino

The Golden Gate Hotel & Casino is a 122-room property that’s one of the oldest (since 1906) and smallest in town.

It’s known for being the first casino in Vegas to completely eliminate human dealers (it’s all-electronic). One of its bars is famous for frozen drinks chilled by Vegas’ only geothermal, closed-loop cooling system… and its bikini-clad bartenders, if you’re into that.

The lowest price on their official website seems to be US$63.95 per night, so C$63.95 with the promotion (just C$31.98 per person per night with a travel companion). Plus tax.

The participating venue for the drinks at par promotion is the Bar Prohibition (not the one with the bikinis, the other one).

There are 383 slot machines.

What are the dates of the Las Vegas Canadian dollar at par promotion?

The promotion is now in effect and lasts until August 31, 2026.

How can I maximize the Las Vegas Canadian dollar at par promotion?

They give you a promotional voucher for the slot machines. You can probably circumvent the US$500 maximum by using different Canadian IDs, but that’s not what we mean by maximize.

As is always the case with us travel rewards fanatics, our first thought was whether there was a way to really maximize this somehow.

More specifically, to game this. Hey, it’s Vegas, baby!

They give you a US$500 slot machine voucher, for just C$500. That’s C$183 free if you could just cash out the voucher after 1 spin on a low-denominational slot machine.

But it seems that’s not possible. The official terms and conditions indeed say you need to “play through” your voucher.

But sometimes, what works in practice is very different than what the official rules say in theory. This is actually one of the most important things to know in the wonderful world of travel rewards! We’ll have a fun announcement for you to learn more about this very soon.

Now, I have to say, gambling on a slot machine is just about the least appealing thing in the world to me. I have literally no idea how they work, so I asked experts.

Their understanding is that you really need to play through the whole voucher, so you need to bet at least US$500.

They said it’s still a good deal, because you apparently shouldn’t lose 26% (26% is the extra value you get for free with the dollar at par), so you’d still end up with a profit.

At least, if you know what you’re doing… but I certainly don’t.

That said, if I were in town, I’d certainly test it out with a smaller amount voucher to see if you really do need to play through the whole amount or if you can cash out after a single bet, just in case.

Why are these hotels offering the Las Vegas Canadian dollar at par promotion?

The owner of the 3 hotels, Derek Stevens, says he loves Canadians. He could see Canada from the house where he grew up in Grosse Pointe (Michigan), and his father attended the University of Toronto.

In a CTV interview, he specifically mentions spending a lot of his 19th and 20th years in Windsor (the legal drinking age in the US is 21). I would expect nothing less from someone who becomes a Vegas casino owner!

He says he wants to eliminate the obstacle of our weak Canadian dollar, to encourage more Canadians to return.

The number of Canadian travelers to Las Vegas is declining. Although the total decline in Canadian travelers in the US is 26%, it is certainly higher in Las Vegas because it is a leisure destination (rather than a business destination).
