The video shot in Myrtle Beach is not fake, but what the bird is carrying is not a shark (even if it does look like one at first glance). It is apparently a large Atlantic Spanish mackerel, but the scene is still pretty impressive.
With 2020 going the way it has, flying sharks would not have been that surprising right?
The video
First, here’s the video that is going viral:
Many people online thought it was a small shark, but a local meteorologist debunked that and is very confident that it was an Atlantic Spanish mackerel. Others simply thought the video was fake, and it’s not hard to see why.
A large fish trying to free itself from a raptor (an osprey) just above a beach is definitely not something you see often.
The video was shot in late June by a traveler from her room on the 17th floor of an oceanfront tower in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Myrtle Beach might not be the most exotic destination, but I found it great for a long weekend getaway.
In fact, my trip to Myrtle Beach in 2011 was the first time I ever flew an Ultra Low-Cost Carrier (ULCC).
My girlfriend and I were supposed to just go on a roadtrip in the Northeastern USA for the weekend as we often do, but I spotted cheap plane tickets to Myrtle Beach from Plattsburgh Airport near Montreal for just US$55 roundtrip.
That was just C$54 roundtrip with our Canadian dollar being worth more than the US dollar back then. The good old times.
Anyway, why stay close when you can go far away for such a low price? ULCCs are amazing. We spent a few days in Myrtle Beach and discovered a new destination we had never been to, one that was a bit more of a culture shock than the Northeast.
That’s why we love ULCCs. They’re one of the reasons I was able to travel to 50 different countries in the past 3 years: flights can be really cheap if you want them to be, and that is true on every continent in the world.
A bit less so in Canada of course, due to our astronomical airport taxes (which is why airports across the border can be very useful—at least once the Canada/USA border closure ends).
