Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy promotion (February 2024): get 10,000 bonus points after 3 nights

There’s a new promotion from Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy (HVMB), the private accommodation rentals brand of the Marriott hotel chain. After 3 eligible nights, you get 10,000 bonus points (≈ $90). It can be interesting if you already had plans to stay in a villa or a house rather than a hotel — especially on the higher end. 

Hotel promotions can sometimes be worth it. And Marriott has the best hotel rewards program for Canadians. It’s simple, every traveler should have the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card in their wallet. Especially with its new increased offer.

But in addition to the 8,000 hotels where you can earn points and use points or free nights, there are also 140,000 accommodations via Homes & Villas Marriott Bonvoy. This platform is their answer to Airbnb and Vrbo — but HVMB mostly offers premium options.

Here are the basics of the promotion:

• Book 3 consecutive nights (or more) in a Homes & Villas accommodation
  • Minimum of US$1,000 (~ C$1,350) before taxes and fees
• Receive 10,000 bonus points (value of ≈ 90$)
  • In addition to the regular earn

Here are the promotion validity dates:

• Stays before May 31, 2024
• Bookings made before February 29, 2024

Here’s how to take advantage of the promotion:

• Register for the promotion in a few seconds 
  • On the Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy website
• Book an eligible stay with Marriott directly
  • On the Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy website
• Pay for the stay 100% in cash (with a good credit card) 
  • Not in points/certificates
• Receive bonus points after the stay
  • Approximately 3-6 weeks after

Here are some other details about the promotion:

• Unlimited bonus points
  • So book 2 times 3 nights and not 6 nights
• Marriott branded residence-style accommodations excluded
  • For example, Ritz-Carlton Residences

• Via the Marriott Bonvoy program
  • 5 pts/US$ for all (not 10 as in hotels)
  • 5.5 pts/US$ if you have the Marriott Bonvoy Amex Card

Analysis of the Homes & Villas Marriott Bonvoy promotion

Overall, it’s a good promotion if it was already in your plans to book an Airbnb/Vrbo-style accommodation in the premium segment. But as is very often the case, it’s not good enough to plan a trip around the promotion.

If you were already thinking of booking a villa or residence, not only are there some very luxurious options that are perfect for family or group getaways, but you also get 10,000 bonus Marriott points to save on a future booking. 

Sure, that doesn’t sound like much when you compare it to the 71,000 points you can get with the Marriott Bonvoy Amex Card‘s welcome bonus.

We can’t stress it enough: welcome bonuses are always the best way to earn points fast.

If you book, for example, an accommodation at exactly US$1000 (~ C$1350) assuming 10% in tax, you’ll receive back just 6% on your entire spend with this promotion’s bonus. 

So it’s not much, but it’s better than 0% with Airbnb and Vrbo!

Also, your 3-night reservation earns you Marriott elite night credits. For each night, you earn 1 elite night credit, which will help you reach the higher level of Marriott elite status faster.

With elite status, you get, for example, free breakfasts, free room upgrades, late check-out, and more bonus points for stays paid with cash.

As with almost all hotel promotions, registration is mandatory and it’s very easy.

Go to the Home & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy promotion page.

On the page, there’s a big black button that says “Sign in & Register”. Click on it!

 

A Marriott Bonvoy account is required for this promotion. If you don’t have one, you’ll be asked to create one directly on the page. It’s free and takes no more than 2 minutes.

Now all you have to do is book your stay!

 

Card to use to book the Homes & Villas promotion

Choosing the right credit card is always the key to maximizing travel rewards. Both the right cards to get and the right cards to use.

For the Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy promotion, here are, in order, your best card options to use to pay for your stay.

(Unless you want to use single points from bank programs to pay for your stay, in which case obviously use the card on which you have points!)

 

18.5% on cards with welcome bonuses

As with any expense, the best return is always going to be by unlocking a huge new welcome bonus.

 

≈ 4.5% with Marriott Bonvoy cards

Marriott Bonvoy cards are obviously the best option if you’re not unlocking bonuses.

 

1% on cards with no foreign transaction fees

Only if you book accommodation in foreign currencies. The cards mentioned above are still worth it with their 2.5% fee, but these are the best otherwise.

 

≈ 3% with cards that have multiplier rates on trips

Finally, several cards have multiplier earn rates for the travel category at least, if you’re going to pay 2.5% in foreign transaction fees.

There are over 30 Marriott hotel brands, making it the largest hotel chain in the world.

In 2019, the company launched its Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy platform to compete with Airbnb, Vrbo, Sonder, Plum Guide, and all the other private accommodation rental sites.

As mentioned above, the 140,000 accommodation options are mainly focused on the high-end segment.

The properties on the platform are not owned by Marriott, but there are standards to be met and a certain level of service when booking via the Marriott platform.

It allows you to earn Marriott points (most other private accommodation rental sites don’t offer any rewards) and use Marriott points (which is rarely a good use though). 

It gives you the opportunity to earn elite night credits for elite status in addition to enjoying some of the privileges that come with status, all without having to go to a hotel.

It’s the best of both worlds for those who like the benefits of hotel rewards programs…but who also prefer private accommodations!
