You are currently viewing How to redeem Scene+ points (step by step)

Scene+ points are literally the absolute simplest travel rewards that exist. You can redeem them for literally any travel expense booked on literally any website. You can actually even redeem them for something other than travel without losing value (a rarity in the world of rewards).

Logistically, Scene+ points are extremely easy to redeem too — just like almost every reward currency is.

So the current amazing deal for $825 free is great for travel rewards beginners who want things to be simple! Or for those who are already part of our Flytrippers fans who have earned over 3 million dollars with our travel rewards deals but want a huge bonus for simple points!

Here’s exactly how to redeem your Scene+ points, including a step-by-step with screenshots.

All redemption options for Scene+ points

The goal is always to have the most rewards and to maximize the value of all your rewards. As rewards of the more simple type, Scene+ points are very easy to understand, redeem, and maximize.

Obviously, one of the basics of travel rewards is that all reward programs offer many redemption options, most of which give you a different value.

For each available redemption option, here is the value per Scene+ point:

  • : Any trips on any website
  • : Any trips on the Scene+ website
  • : Merchandise at participating stores
  • : Gift cards for participating stores
  • ≈ 0.7¢: Merchandise and gift cards online
  • 0.7¢: Cash back as a statement credit

Unfortunately, many people don’t quite grasp how huge of a difference there is between 0.7¢/pt and 1¢/pt (a whopping 43% more value!!!). When the value is expressed in ¢/pt (the standard measurement unit for rewards value), the difference seems less major than it is.

So, for a concrete example, here’s the value of the 82,500 points you’ll have by unlocking the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card‘s current increased welcome bonus:

  • $825: Any trips on any website
  • $825: Any trips on the Scene+ website
  • $825: Merchandise at participating stores
  • $825: Gift cards for participating stores
  • ≈ $578: Merchandise and gift cards online
  • $578: Cash back as a statement credit

And here’s a reminder of how many Scene+ points you can easily get with the best cards:

With the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card currently offering one of the best welcome bonuses ever seen in Canada for simple points, we’ll have a lot more content about this program.

Join 100,000+ savvy Canadian travelers! We’ll soon have an ultimate guide to the Scene+ program (and many other reward programs) — make sure you receive our free newsletter specifically for travel rewards to get all our content.

Best redemptions of Scene+ points

It’s one of the simplest reward currencies and offers the most flexibility, so it’s really not very hard to decide.

If you want things to be simple, you should simply redeem your Scene+ points for any travel expense booked directly with the airline, hotel, Airbnb, car rental agency, train/bus company, or any other travel site if they have a really lower price than booking directly.

It allows you to book where the price is the lowest and to earn rewards on your purchase (on your credit card and with the travel provider’s own rewards program directly).

For flights, it makes no sense at all to not redeem your points that way, because you should always book directly on the airline’s website to avoid problems (one of the most basic things to know). The only exception is the price is much lower on Scene+ Travel or any other website (which can happen, but it’s rare).

For hotels, car rentals, and others, booking direct isn’t as important, so you can consider the other option.

The only upside to redeeming points with Scene+ Travel instead of with the travel provider directly is you’ll earn 3 pts/$ (3%) even when redeeming points.

That’s more than what you’ll get with your card’s earn rate for the travel category if you book directly, but it’s lower than 10% back with Hotels.com or even more with hotel chains’ reward programs directly (like Marriott Bonvoy). It can make sense in some cases if the merchant’s own rewards are 2% or less or if they’re not as flexible and easy to use.

But there’s a good redemption that is surprising.

You can also redeem Scene+ points for free merchandise at many Scene+ retail partners such as Sobeys-affiliated grocery stores, Home Hardware, and more.

To be very clear, it’s the only example of a time when it makes sense to redeem for something other than travel because, with Scene+ points, you don’t lose value by choosing that option. With every other reward program, travel redemptions give you more value than other options. But Scene+ is as much a retail program as it is a bank program.

So if you shop at these stores anyway, it actually makes more sense to redeem for merchandise in order to redeem your points faster! Because Scene+ points have a fixed value of 1¢ anyway… but today is obviously worth more than in 2 months, given our government-spending-induced inflation.

How to redeem Scene+ points for any trips on any website

This is by far the best way to redeem points for travel, to have the most flexibility and to earn rewards on your credit card and with the travel provider’s reward program directly.

Here’s what to do:

  • Book any travel expense on any website
  • Pay with your Scotiabank credit card
  • Go to the Apply Points to Travel page
  • Login to your Scene+ account
  • Apply points to the travel expense

This is very easy to do, and I show you exactly how below.

Here are a few other details:

  • You can redeem for travel expenses up to 12 months old
  • You can redeem for any purchases coded in the travel category
  • You can redeem in any increments of points (no minimum)
  • You can redeem even without having the points to cover the whole expense
  • You will earn rewards on your credit card and with the provider’s program

How to redeem Scene+ points with Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia

This can sometimes be the better way to redeem to earn simpler rewards, depending on the travel provider’s own rewards program and the Expedia price.

Here’s what to do:

  • Go to the Scene+ Travel page
  • Login to your Scene+ account
  • Find travel on Scene+ Travel
  • Pay with points on the payment page

This is also very straightforward so the step-by-step guide below for redemptions for any travel expense should be enough to help you. You just choose the other option and book normally on the Scene+ Travel website, with the only difference being you pay with points at the end.

Here are a few other details:

  • You can redeem for many types of travel purchases
  • You can redeem in any increments of points (no minimum)
  • You can redeem even without having the points to cover the whole expense
  • You will earn rewards through Scene+ Travel (3 pts/$, which is 3%)

How to redeem Scene+ points at participating stores

This is by far the best way to redeem if you shop at these stores, to redeem faster and keep your points from losing value due to inflation.

Here’s what to do:

  • Go to a participating store
  • Show your Scene+ membership card at checkout
  • Apply points by telling the cashier

This is extremely straightforward and doesn’t require a step-by-step.

Here are a few more details:

  • You can use the Scene+ app or your digital wallet
  • You must redeem in minimum increments
    • 1,000 points ($10) at grocery stores
    • 1,000 points ($10) at pharmacies
    • 1,000 points ($10) at Home Hardware
    • 500 points ($5) at restaurants
    • 500 points ($5) at The Rec Room and Playdium
    • 100 points ($1) at Cineplex (movies)
    • 500 points ($5) at Cineplex (food and drinks)

How to redeem Scene+ points for merchandise and gift cards online

This should always be avoided, as with all rewards!

Here’s what to do:

  • Go to the Scene+ Rewards page
  • Login to your Scene+ account
  • Buy merchandise or gift cards
  • Pay with points

Once again, I can’t stress how terrible this is, apart from maybe buying the specific gift cards that offer a 1¢/pt value (the ones for the participating Scene+ stores like Sobeys).

How to redeem Scene+ points for cash back as a statement credit

This should always be avoided, as with all rewards!

Here’s what to do:

  • Go to the Scene+ Rewards page
  • Login to your Scene+ account
  • Select the terrible statement credit option

There’s absolutely no circumstance where this makes sense with points that are so easy to use for free groceries and that give you 43% more value for groceries. Don’t do it.

Step by step: How to redeem Scene+ points for travel online

Judging by the many questions we get on this topic, many people very much overestimate the difficulty of redeeming or managing any reward currency.

It’s really not complicated: everything can easily be done on any program’s website since it’s 2024 (with very few exceptions). That’s obviously the first place you should look, for any rewards program.

We’ll help you with this one to save you time (and many more are coming), but for others, you can always just take the time to read on any program website, and you’ll surely find what you are looking for.

1. Login to your Scene+ account

You have Scene+ points, so you redeem them on the Scene+ website (or on the Scene+ app).

I’ll assume you know how to log in, but if not, the steps are in the next section.

2. Go to the rewards dashboard

There are only 4 options in the Scene+ website’s top menu.

You want to use rewards, so click “Rewards” (“Points” could’ve been a good guess, too; again, there aren’t that many options, so you can always figure it out for any program if you simply take a few minutes to play around with them).

3. Go to the travel option

The rewards redemption menu’s very first icon is “Travel” so that’s obviously the one to choose.

If you scroll down just a little bit, you’ll see “Ways to redeem” with your 2 travel redemption options.

Click on “Apply Points to Travel.”

4. Redeem your rewards

You now see a list of all the recent travel expenses that you charged to your card (you’ll need to select the right card in the dropdown menu if you have more than one).

If it’s empty, just change the date to select any month in the last 12 months.

You simply select the travel expenses for which you want to redeem points.

Select any of them and do it right away; these points are so flexible and easy to use that there’s no reason at all to wait, as they have a fixed value anyway.

You’ll see a message when you reach the maximum amount of points you have.

You can do partial redemptions, so it’s really as flexible as possible. Click on the purple “Continue” button.

You click on “Yes, continue” to finalize the redemption.

Is it the same value when booking a flight through the Scene+ Expedia link? Step by step instructions for that process would be great too.

    1. Andrew D'Amours

It’s the same value, but as explained, it’s really best to book directly with airlines for flights.
We can do a step by step, but in the meantime it’s really exactly like booking any flight, you just do it on the Scene+ website and select “pay with points” on the last screen 🙂
