You are currently viewing Bill payment services (Chexy, Plastiq, PaySimply): Ultimate guide (2025)

There are several expenses that unfortunately cannot be paid **directly** by credit card: income taxes, rent, property taxes, condo fees, utilities, car payments, tuition, etc. But you can actually pay them by credit card and earn more rewards thanks to bill payment services.

These tools are absolutely essential to earn A LOT more rewards.

The key to earning more is always to unlock more welcome bonuses — and these large expenses will help you do that! At a minimum, even if you go the slow route, these tools can still always give you profits (2.25% in profit on all these payments).

There’s a brand new partnership between the best bill payment service and the best rewards program (Aeroplan) that just launched, so it’s a good time for us to update this guide and for you to finally use these services (for income tax season or for many other things).

Here’s everything you need to know about bill payment services.

Basics of bill payment services

I’ve been using bill payment services myself for several years to pay my taxes and many other things with my numerous credit cards. It allows me to get thousands of dollars in free travel (including in business class).

But the most important thing to understand is that doing this is not necessarily for everyone!

For pros! For savvy travelers who understand how the wonderful (but very counterintuitive) world of travel rewards works, using bill payment services to pay by credit card is a no-brainer. For others who aren’t pros yet… it depends! But we’re going to help you become a pro today!

The thing is, unlike when you pay at merchants that accept credit cards, paying via bill payment services is not free.

But the very low fees are definitely worth it when you know about travel rewards… and especially when you use the right cards!

How bill payment services work

Bill payment services are very secure and reliable. They are used by thousands of people.

Here’s how the services work:

  • You pay the amount to the bill payment service
    • With one of your credit cards
    • The service adds a minimal fee
  • The bill payment service sends the amount to the recipient
    • Even if they don’t accept credit cards
    • The payment looks absolutely identical to them

Really not complicated at all. But it’s quite unknown, like so many travel rewards tricks!

Join 100,000+ savvy travelers! If you didn’t know about bill payment services, that’s normal! But it means you’re certainly missing out on plenty of other simple tricks to get more rewards. Sign up for our free travel rewards newsletter now, and you’ll receive plenty of tips to become a pro!

List of bill payment services

I’ll share a brief comparison of each service a bit further down, but I want to at least list them for you right away.

Here are the 3 bill payment services available in Canada and their details:

  • Chexy: 1.75% fee (welcome bonus of $15 or more)
    • Visa and Amex cards only
    • Any rent
    • Taxes, auto, and several others
  • Plastiq: 2.9% fee (welcome bonus of $29)
    • Mastercard, Visa, and Amex cards
    • Any recipient
  • PaySimply: 2.49% fee (no welcome bonus)
    • Mastercard, Visa, and Amex cards
    • Taxes and a few others
Minimal fee! You can easily earn 18.5% back on Chexy with one card right now (and at least 10% almost year-round), so obviously it’s worth paying 1.75%!!! The best cards to use are listed below.

I’ll spoil the section below and give you our Flytrippers recommendation for bill payment services.

Chexy has the lowest fees and is clearly the best option for Canadians in 2025 (for Amex and Visa). It also gives you at least $15 (after your 1st payment) and up to 10,000 Aeroplan points (with more payments). This is obviously all on top of your credit card rewards!

Support us at no cost! Click directly on our Chexy link (and any of our links) or save our Chexy link in your favorites, instead of going directly to their site! It’s a way to support Flytrippers at absolutely no cost to you! We sincerely thank you.

Plastiq is the best for Mastercard if you have $3,500 in payments to make (after a $2,500 payment within 30 days, you’ll get a 0% fee on your next $1,000 in payments), and for recipients who aren’t on the other tools’ lists.

Benefits of bill payment services

The benefits are strictly financial. But they are huge!

Here are the 2 concrete benefits of using bill payment services:

  • Earn more rewards
    • By far the most important
  • Earn more interest
    • Or have more financial flexibility

The next 2 sections detail these 2 benefits. The 1st one alone gives you so much more than the bill payment services’ fees.

When I say it’s absolutely worth paying these fees if you use the right card, in this case, it’s not even debatable. It’s not subjective at all. Even less than the trick for a full row, because here it’s purely mathematical.

Although wanting to avoid fees is very logical at first glance and also an excellent reflex in almost all domains… it doesn’t make sense at all in the very counterintuitive world of travel rewards.

It’s the most basic of the basics! It’s really vital!

6 most important things! Knowing how to do math properly is literally one of the 6 most important things in the entire world of travel rewards, as indicated in our Flytrippers infographic that summarizes all the basics.

Rewards earned with bill payment services

Chexy‘s fee is 1.75%. So obviously it’s pretty simple: you need to pay with cards that earn more than 1.75%. All rewards beyond 1.75% are free travel that you can obtain so easily!

There are plenty of ways to earn more than 1.75%… regardless of whether you go the fast way (welcome bonuses) or the slow way (no welcome bonuses).

Here are the 3 categories of credit cards to use to easily get more than the 1.75% fee (or even more than the 2.9% fee):

  • Card on which you’re unlocking a welcome bonus
    • It can give you 18.5% right now
    • There’s an important caveat, though
  • Card that earns rewards of the more lucrative type
    • It can give you 2.5% or even 5%
    • The value of rewards is unlimited
    • Very profitable if you redeem them well
    • Notably allows you to travel in business class
  • Card that earns rewards of the more simple type
    • It can give you 4% in simple cashback
    • Very easy way to make guaranteed profits
    • At a minimum… you MUST do this!

But if you’re sadly earning a terrible rate of 1% on your card… then obviously it’s not savvy to pay 1.75% — just as it’s really not savvy to earn just 1% on anything really, by the way (even without the bill payment service fee)!!!

Here is more information about the 3 categories (and our specific card recommendation in the 1st line of each).

Card on which you’re unlocking a welcome bonus

Our current Flytrippers recommendation is definitely the BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard, as it has one of the highest welcome bonuses ever seen in Canada! For Chexy specifically (no Mastercards), the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card is the one that gives you 18.5% back!

Here are the 5 best current welcome bonuses that give you a huge discount on bill payment services.

You can always earn great rates like 18.5% back on everything when you’ve understood THE most important thing in the entire world of travel rewards: welcome bonuses are the key!

Obviously it makes sense to pay 1.75% in fees when you earn 18.5%! With one caveat…

It’s only savvy IF you unlock MORE welcome bonuses!

Let’s say you unfortunately only get 4 welcome bonuses in a year. Even if these bonuses obviously give excellent returns… it doesn’t make sense to pay bill payment service fees when you could clearly unlock these bonuses without paying fees (your “normal” expenses are enough to unlock them, and you wouldn’t pay any fees).

So you need to get more bonuses. You’ll improve your credit score and get lots of benefits, in addition to getting so many more rewards.

Otherwise, get cards from the next 2 categories to use on bill payment services if you don’t get more bonuses.

The only exception is if you want to take advantage of welcome bonuses that have spending requirements that are too high to be achievable with your “normal” expenses. Then it’s worth paying fees even without getting more bonuses, because that bonus wouldn’t have been accessible otherwise!

One example is the Amex Platinum Card, which gives you ≈ $652, free unlimited access to the world’s largest network of VIP airport lounges (for 2), automatic hotel elite status, and many other amazing benefits… but has a minimum spending requirement that’s quite high ($10,000 in 3 months).

Card that earns rewards of the more lucrative type

Our Flytrippers recommendation is definitely the Amex Aeroplan Reserve Card, which has the best base earn rate (excluding bonus categories) in Canada for rewards of the more lucrative type (and unlimited access to Air Canada airport lounges).

If you don’t want a premium card, our recommendation is the Amex Cobalt Card (Amex) or the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card (Visa), which have the same earn rate.

Here’s the list of cards that have the best base earn rates (excluding bonus categories).

If, unfortunately, you don’t want to get more welcome bonuses, some cards have earn rates that are worth it even without a welcome bonus.

This can be particularly interesting if you want to travel in luxurious lie-flat business class pod seats for less than economy class. It’s easy to do if you want, but you absolutely need rewards of the more lucrative type.

The thing is, our Flytrippers Valuation of points is always very conservative and always for economy class point redemptions (because the majority prefers that).

But Aeroplan points can be worth 5.3¢/pt when you use them for business class (like my 13-hour flight to Asia that was worth $4074).

So the base earn rate of 1.25 pts/$ on the Amex Aeroplan Reserve Card doesn’t give you a return of ≈ 1.875% (at our Flytrippers Valuation of ≈ 1.5¢ per Aeroplan point) if you redeem the points well! No: it gives you a 6.6% return!!!

Of course it’s worth paying 1.75% to get points that are worth 6.6% right?

Even if you don’t want a premium-level card, at that incredibly high value, you more than triple all the returns on the cards in the table above.

Card that earns rewards of the more simple type

Our Flytrippers recommendation is definitely the Scotiabank Momentum Visa Infinite Card, as it’ll give you a net profit of 2.25% on all your Chexy payments (4% minus the 1.75% fee). There’s an annual cap of $25,000 in spending, though.

Even if you don’t want to earn more rewards by getting more welcome bonuses, and even if you don’t want rewards of the more lucrative type…

It’s still very savvy to use bill payment services with a credit card that gives more than 1.75% on the recurring payments category (Chexy is coded this way). I repeat that it gives you completely free cash back rewards!

Here are the cards with the best multiplier rates for recurring payments.

Yes, there’s a fee. But who cares! The rewards are higher. Easy math.

In any financial decision, you should always look at both sides of the equation. Never just one side! Simple. Yes, you look at the fee… but you also obviously look at what the fee gives you. Otherwise, it just doesn’t make sense.

You should always look at the net value you get! In everything related to travel rewards.

Interest earned with bill payment services

Rewards get all the attention, and for good reason.

But there’s another financial benefit to using bill payment services: earning interest on these amounts (or increased financial flexibility).

Here’s what that means:

  • When you pay from your bank account
    • You have to pay the amount immediately
  • When you use bill payment services
    • You have a grace period of at least 21 days

If you already have the cash flow, you can easily earn interest on these amounts during the 21 days you have to pay your credit card statement (at least an annual rate of 4% in a free EQ Bank account).

It’s far from being as much as the free travel obtained with welcome bonuses, obviously, but on large amounts like this each month for 3 weeks at a time, it’s not nothing either.

If you’re tighter in terms of money, you’ll have 21 more days to pay! It’s not worth paying the fee **just for this**! But combined with the rewards earned that offset the fee, it’s nice.

It can even save you interest if you’re in a situation where you have to use a line of credit or another type of debt to pay your big expenses like rent.

Comparison of bill payment services

Here’s a short introduction to the 3 services.

Chexy

Chexy has the lowest fee and is clearly the best option for Canadians in 2025 (for Amex and Visa). It’s a Canadian fintech based in Toronto. You get $15 with our link, after your 1st payment.

I’ve used Chexy for the worst payment of all (taxes) and a few other types of payments. It works very well. I’ve also heard very good things from those who have rent and pay it this way.

For rent, it works for anyone. Your landlord doesn’t need to do anything or know anything (you just need a lease). With your rent payment, you can even build your credit to improve your score if it’s not optimal!

Chexy allows you to make payments for income taxes, rent, condo fees, property taxes, cars, tuition, and so much more. But apart from rent, it’s a fixed list of recipients (the same as in your bank account’s bill payment feature). You can’t make a custom payment to just anyone.

You can also reduce the 1.75% fee by referring your travel companions (who will also be able to earn more rewards).

Plus, there’s a new partnership with Aeroplan that can give you 10,000 Aeroplan points (worth ≈ $150 to UNLIMITED) in addition to your regular credit card rewards.

You can read all the details in our Chexy guide — and if you had already read this tip, you can go directly to the new Aeroplan partnership.

Plastiq

Plastiq is a bit more expensive, but a good option if you want to use a Mastercard (like the great brand new BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard that gives ≈ $1590 but has a higher spending requirement) or if you want to pay anything by credit.

There’s a welcome bonus of sorts: if you use our Plastiq link and make a payment of $2500 in the first 30 days, you’ll get a 0% fee on your next $1000 in payments ($25 savings)!

I’ve been using Plastiq for years, and it works very well!

The advantage of Plastiq is that you can send a bill payment to absolutely anyone. Your contractor for renovations doesn’t accept credit cards? You can pay them via Plastiq. Anyone and anything!

We’ll soon update our Plastiq guide.

PaySimply

PaySimply charges a higher fee than Chexy and a slightly lower fee than Plastiq, but without offering a welcome bonus.

You can use a Mastercard, like the new  BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard, for tax payments (but not rent).

We’ll share a guide on PaySimply soon.

Summary

It’s very savvy to use your credit cards to pay your taxes, rent, car payments, and many other expenses that cannot be paid **directly** by credit card! Bill payment services like Chexy are obviously worth it, even if they charge fees… if you use the right card.
