You are currently viewing Answers to 25 questions received about the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card ($1025 free)

The record-high offer on the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card gives you $1025 in simple rewards, plus 4 free passes to VIP airport lounges. These rewards are among the simplest that exist, as they’re redeemable for (almost) any travel expense at a fixed value, with no restrictions. It’s definitely a great time to take advantage of the deal now, so we want to help you by answering all the questions we’ve received about it.

The answer to literally 95%+ of the many questions we receive about the world of travel rewards is always so easy to find in 2 places: in our infographic that summarizes all the basics of travel rewards that’s mandatory to read (basic general questions) and in our resource page for each card with 10+ tabs of information (card-specific questions).

But since it’s one of the best offers ever seen in Canada for simple points, I want to gather all the questions about this specific deal here. I will tell you the answer, but more importantly, I will tell you where you can find the answer so that you can be self-sufficient and that you can easily get huge welcome bonuses like this many times in the year (not sadly get just one!).

If you want more info, you can of course read our resource page for the card. If you have a question and the answer is not available there, email me, and it’ll be my pleasure to assist you. We also have a more concise review of the card if you prefer.

Here are the answers to the 25 questions we’ve received about the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, by theme (many of the questions were repeated many times, so I combined and reworded them).

Offer eligibility (5 questions)

The topic that is a recurring issue and is one of the easiest to resolve when you know where to find the information.

1. Can I apply for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card and get the welcome bonus even if I currently have the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card?

Our card resource page always has a summary table at the top that clearly outlines several important details, including the welcome bonus eligibility rule.

Bonus eligibility rule (image credit: Flytrippers)

For the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, it says “must not have activated/closed this specific card in the last 12 months.”

So yes, you can apply for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card even if you already have the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card… as long as you haven’t activated/closed the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card in the last 12 months.

As with almost all banks, TD has separate rules per card. Having one card certainly doesn’t prevent you from getting others. The only major exception is Scotiabank (at least in theory; in practice, they don’t often enforce their rule).

The numerous information tabs at the bottom of our card resource page always have more details on each topic.

The “Eligibility & end date” tab also has a link to learn more about the topic, i.e., our ultimate guide to welcome bonus eligibility rules.

Link for more details (image credit: Flytrippers)

2. I already have a TD card from the same product family (TD Rewards points), but I would like to apply for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card. Can I do that?

Same place to find the answer and same answer.

The concept of rules by product family does not exist with TD, nor with most banks. These are all separate cards.

So yes, you can apply for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card even if you already have a different card that earns TD Rewards points.

3. I have an RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card, can I apply for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card?

Same place to find the answer and same answer.

Other banks have absolutely nothing to do with the rules of one bank. The only exception in Canada is Aeroplan cards (because 3 different banks issue Aeroplan cards).

So yes, you can apply for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card even if you already have an RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card (or literally any other card in the world).

4. I already had a TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card that I canceled last year. Can I still get the welcome bonus?

Same place to find the answer and same answer.

So it depends on when you closed your TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card last year.

If it’s been more than 12 months, you can get the bonus. If it’s been less than 12 months, you can’t get the bonus.

You can get the welcome bonus an unlimited number of times on almost all cards in Canada. The 2 exceptions are Aeroplan cards (at least in theory; in practice, you can currently reapply for cards of the same level and still get the main part of the bonus, which is almost as excellent as the whole bonus) and Amex Bank cards (at least in theory; in practice, they often let you get the bonus on the same card after a few years).

5. The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card‘s rule states that you must not have activated or closed this specific card in the last 12 months. How strict are they about this?

We can only list the official rules on our card resource page, which are the rules in theory.

In practice, unfortunately, it really depends on the bank. Some are very strict in applying their rules, while many are not at all.

Most are somewhere in between. TD Bank generally applies its rules.

Card offer (4 questions)

The topic that’s the most important part of all your card applications (if you understood the most important thing in our infographic summarizing all the basics of travel rewards).

6. I applied for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card. Does that entitle me to the welcome bonus? And if so, how do I take advantage of it?

Our infographic summarizing the basics of travel rewards covers the basic principle: banks give huge welcome bonuses, and you almost always have a minimum spending requirement to reach in order to unlock the bonus. That’s it. Nothing else.

Our card resource page always has a summary table at the top that clearly shows several important details, including the minimum spending requirement to unlock the welcome bonus.

Minimum spending requirement (image credit: Flytrippers)

The numerous information tabs below always have more details on each topic.

The “Welcome bonus” tab lists the detailed structure of the offer.

Offer structure (image credit: Flytrippers)

So if you spend $5,000 in a maximum of 180 days, you will get the full bonus (provided you meet the welcome bonus eligibility rules, which is almost certainly the case with this card if you’re asking how the welcome bonus works).

7. Your Flytrippers Valuation of the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card mentions $1025 with the welcome bonus. But I only see points worth $825. Where did the remaining $200 go?

Our card resource page always has lots of information tabs, including the “Flytrippers Valuation of the offer” tab, which clearly shows all the details of our calculation.

Details of our Valuation (image credit: Flytrippers)

For the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, it says there are 165,000 TD Rewards points ($825) and 2 travel credits of $100 each ($200).

We don’t often include card benefits in our Flytrippers Valuation (for example, we didn’t assign any value to this card’s 4 lounge passes).

But when the benefit is so easy to use for all travelers at a simple guaranteed fixed value (like the $100 TD travel credit), we include it.

8. To unlock the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card‘s welcome bonus, we have to spend $5000 in 180 days. Can I pay my balance as I make purchases, or are the $5000 only counted according to the amounts shown on my monthly statements? In other words, if I spend more than $5000 during the period, but I pay everything before even receiving my statements (so they show a $0 balance), will I still unlock the bonus?

Our infographic summarizing the basics of travel rewards covers the basic principle: banks give huge welcome bonuses, and you almost always have a minimum spending requirement to reach in order to unlock the bonus. That’s it. Nothing else.

Payments made to your account never have anything to do with anything. If you spend the required amount (and you don’t have any refunds from merchants that reduce the net amount spent), you unlock the bonus. It’s a minimum spending requirement, not a statement balance requirement.

So yes, you will get the welcome bonus from the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card even if you make your credit card payments too quickly for no reason.

It’s worth mentioning that there’s no reason to pay before the statement due date. Paying for your purchases as you go is really not necessary, and not recommended at all. The bank is giving you an interest-free loan until the due date, so take advantage of it!

As long as you pay in full by the due date, you pay no interest and improve your credit score. It’s also much simpler than making more frequent payments uselessly!

9. How to choose between the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card and another card?

Our infographic summarizing all the basics of travel rewards covers choosing cards in step 1 of the 6 simple steps to always follow (at the bottom of the infographic, there are a few more details on certain topics, such as this one, and it gives you a link to our ultimate guide on how to choose your cards).

This is obviously the most important and complex part. It depends on so many factors. That guide is really the best way to decide every time you’re due for a new card.

So right now, the welcome bonus for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card is by far the best for simple points, and you really can’t go wrong with this one. It’s one of the best ever seen in Canada for simple points.

The other cards can simply be your next cards. The only exception to this is the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card if you want points of the more lucrative type (including to fly in business class), because its record-high offer ends on June 11.

Redeeming the card’s points (5 questions)

The topic that scares many people, even though it certainly shouldn’t with simple points like these.

10. I got the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, but what exactly are “simple points?”

Our infographic summarizing all the basics of travel rewards covers the 2 types of points that exist (simple points and lucrative points) in the 6 most important things to know (at the bottom of the infographic, there are a few more details on certain topics, such as this one, and it gives you a link to our explanation of the 2 types of points that exist).

Basics of the 2 types of points (image credit: Flytrippers)

So the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card‘s points are simple points, meaning that the number of points required for a trip is simply tied to the cash price of the trip. You can’t get good deals or outsized value. The value of the points is fixed (or relatively fixed in some cases). There are no restrictions or complexities regarding point redemptions.

Our card resource page always has lots of information tabs, including the “Redemption options & values” tab and the “Examples of best redemptions” tab, which explain the basics of how this specific currency works.

Rewards currency details (image credit: Flytrippers)

By the way, this is the kind of vital detail that we strongly recommend understanding BEFORE applying for a card, not after.

11. I unlocked my TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card bonus, but I’m wondering how it works if I want to buy a plane ticket. I’ve heard lots of different things, so I’m a bit confused. Do I have to buy it directly on the airline’s website or the Expedia for TD website?

Our card resource page always has lots of information tabs, including the “Redemption options & values” tab, which clearly outlines all your options.

Redemption options (image credit: Flytrippers)

So the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card gives you the choice to redeem your points on the Expedia for TD platform or with any travel provider.

But the value is 25% higher if you go through their site, so obviously that’s what we recommend. It’s much more savvy, especially since Expedia is one of the biggest travel sites in the world and has almost every option (and often at the lowest prices).

It’s normal to “hear lots of different things” because all reward currencies always have multiple redemption options! It’s best to get used to that. The important thing to understand is that each option often gives you a very different value.

Also… a lot of people don’t know what they’re talking about (they don’t have any bad intentions, they’re just not well informed). So just refer to our simple list that tells you what redemption options are available, rather than relying on what you hear from others who, objectively, almost certainly don’t know as much about it as we do.

In the tabs on our card resource page, you’ll often find a link to learn more about the topic, such as our ultimate guide on how to redeem TD Rewards points.

Link for more details (image credit: Flytrippers)

12. Does the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card also offer cash back, or is it points only?

Our card resource page always has a summary table at the top that clearly outlines several important details, including the rewards currency the card earns.

Rewards currency (image credit: Flytrippers)

So the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card only earns TD Rewards points.

No card in Canada earns more than one rewards currency, by the way. That doesn’t exist. It’s one currency, always. Cashback is one of the reward currencies that exist, and it’s by far the worst and most terrible one!

13. Regarding purchasing plane tickets with the cash earned on the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, can I take advantage of the accumulated cash anywhere I can buy plane tickets, for example, via the Air France, Lufthansa, or Skyscanner websites?

Same place to find the answer and same answer, for both aspects.

First, the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card earns points, not “cash.” Cards that earn cashback are terrible; I repeat this because it’s vital.

Second, points can be redeemed in multiple ways, as explained above.

14. Now that I have my TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card and I’ve received all my points, how do I redeem them to buy plane tickets on Expedia for TD? I tried to do a simulation, but I wasn’t offered to redeem my points for a discount.

If you’re logged into your account and search on the Expedia for TD website, it clearly shows the price in cash and in points.

Example of a flight price in cash and in points (image credit: TD Rewards)

So you don’t have to do anything special to redeem your TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card‘s points, except of course logging into your TD Rewards account.

Card benefits (4 questions)

The topic that many people don’t know much about (even though it’s technically a benefit, I’ve excluded insurance to give it its own section just like in our resource pages for each card; I’ve also included a question about earn rates here even though that’s not really a benefit per se).

15. Does the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card give access to VIP airport lounges? If so, in which airports can I take advantage of it?

Our card resource page always has lots of information tabs, including the “Travel benefits & other benefits” tab that clearly lists all the card’s benefits.

Benefits (image credit: Flytrippers)

So yes, the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card offers 4 free passes per year to a network of 1,000+ VIP airport lounges worldwide.

In the tabs on our card resource page, you will often find a link to learn more about the topic, such as our ultimate guide to TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card’s airport lounge access benefit.

Link for more details (image credit: Flytrippers)

That guide explains how to easily access the list of included lounges. The card gives you access to the Visa Airport Companion lounge network. So, logically, the list of lounges can be found on the Visa Airport Companion website or app.

16. We already have the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card; how can we take advantage of the rewards, like lounge access for example?

First, to understand the concepts, lounge access is not a reward. It’s a benefit of the card. Rewards are the currency you earn when you pay with the card, which you can then redeem for free travel.

The benefits are always the same for everyone, whether you’ve had the card for 20 years or you’re applying for it today. It has nothing to do with the welcome bonus or anything like that.

So the lounge access benefit of the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card was added on April 30, 2025, for everyone who already had the card or who get the card moving forward.

Our ultimate guide to the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card’s lounge access benefit explains how easy it is to activate and use your lounge access.

Again, the card gives you access to the Visa Airport Companion lounge network, so everything is done through the Visa Airport Companion website or app.

17. With the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, am I entitled to a free checked bag when I travel with Air Canada?

Our card resource page always has lots of information tabs, including the “Travel benefits & other benefits” tab that clearly lists all the card’s benefits.

Benefits (image credit: Flytrippers)

So the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card does not have this benefit, otherwise we would obviously list it there.

The only cards that have benefits on Air Canada flights are Air Canada-affiliated cards, i.e., cards that have “Aeroplan” (Air Canada’s rewards program) in the card name. No other cards have the Air Canada free checked bags benefit.

18. How do the multiplier earn rates work on the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card?

Our card resource page always has lots of information tabs, including the “Earn rates” tab that clearly shows the earn rates for the card.

Earn rates (image credit: Flytrippers)

So the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, like almost all cards, has different earn rates depending on the merchant category code. There may be one or more multiplier earn rates (in specific categories) and the base earn rate (all categories other than the multiplier rate categories).

If you buy anything at a grocery store that is coded as a grocery store (even if you buy gift cards, for example), you will get the grocery multiplier rate. It’s really only the merchant code that matters.

Card insurance (4 questions)

The topic that single-handedly should make everyone interested in travel rewards!

19. Does the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card include insurance? If so, what exactly is the coverage?

Our card resource page always has lots of information tabs, including the “Insurance coverage” tab that clearly lists all of the card’s coverages.

Insurance (image credit: Flytrippers)

So the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card has all the main types of insurance.

20. Do my plane tickets have to be purchased with the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card in order for me to be covered by the included travel insurance?

The most misunderstood thing about travel insurance is that for medical travel insurance (the most important one), you do NOT need to have paid for the trip with your card (at least with almost all cards, including this one). It covers YOU, so as long as you have the card during the trip, you are covered.

All other insurance coverage covers specific travel expenses, so you must pay for the travel expense in question with your card.

So you must have paid with your TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card for the other types of insurance to be valid (flight delays, bag delays, trip cancellation, trip interruption, rental car damage, hotel burglary, etc.).

21. Are the benefits of the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card the same for people who are 76 years old?

Insurance coverage does vary depending on age, for very obvious reasons (or reasons that should be obvious, at least).

So the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, like almost all cards, has shorter medical travel insurance coverage for those aged 65 and over.

(I’ll assume that by “benefits,” the question is referring only to insurance. All benefits other than insurance are always the same regardless of age!)

The different coverage based on age is also clearly indicated in the “Insurance coverage” tab of our card resource page.

Medical insurance (image credit: Flytrippers)

22. Last year, we followed Flytrippers’ recommendation and got the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card. I redeemed the points for a flight that takes place after my card’s renewal date. Can we downgrade the card to its no-fee version before the trip, or is it better to keep it active to avoid complications if something happens during the trip?

It’s really very simple: if you have a card, you have the benefits of that card. If you don’t have a card… you don’t have the benefits of that card. It’s really no more complicated than that, and it makes perfect sense when you think about it!

So if you don’t have the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card during your trip, you don’t have the card’s travel insurance. It’s really important to take this into account when choosing which card to use to pay for a trip.

(I’ll assume that by “complications,” the question is referring only to insurance. For everything other than insurance, it’s really not a problem to travel without having the card!)

So, since the mistake has already been made and it’s too late to change it, now you have to ask yourself if it’s worth renewing the card to get the insurance (all coverages other than medical travel insurance, since that one is easy to get with another card).

Don’t forget that the fee is $139, but it’s only $39 net since you’ll get another $100 TD travel credit. Plus, it will give you 4 new airport lounge passes as well.

Card renewal (3 questions)

The topic that is really extremely simple for those who have read the 6 simple steps to always follow in our infographic which summarizes all the basics of travel rewards.

23. I applied for and received the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, is it really worth keeping after the first year? I don’t need insurance, so should I change cards or simply cancel it?

Our infographic summarizing all the basics of travel rewards covers card renewals in step 6 of the 6 simple steps you should always follow.

Important steps (image credit: Flytrippers)

Every traveler is different. Every traveler has different priorities and needs. It’s really simple: look at what the card costs and whether it’s less than the amount you value the benefits of keeping it for 1 year.

So if you renew the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, it doesn’t really cost $139. It’s only $39 net since you’ll get another $100 TD travel credit. Plus, you’ll get 4 new airport lounge passes (that’s $10 per pass).

It’s up to you to decide if you can easily redeem the travel credit and if the 4 lounge passes are worth $10 each to you.

But you don’t need to think about that right now, and in fact, you really shouldn’t. The time to reevaluate the card is when your renewal is due, never before. Your situation may change between now and then!

24. Can I cancel the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card after a year and still keep my points to redeem them later? Once the bonus is unlocked, do the points stay in my account even if I cancel the card?

Our card resource page always has lots of information tabs, including the “Rewards expiration” tab, which clearly shows all the details about this.

Expiration (image credit: Flytrippers)

So if you keep the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, the points never expire. If you downgrade to the no-fee version instead of closing the card, you keep the points and they never expire.

But these points are so simple to redeem, it really shouldn’t be a challenge to redeem them within a year if you travel even a little!

25. I’ve never used a credit card with a points system, so this is new to me. I got the welcome bonus for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, but do I keep the points until I redeem them? Is there a time limit for redeeming them?

Same place to find the answer and same answer.

So there is no time limit to redeem the points from the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card. Even if you don’t renew it, by downgrading to the no-fee version instead of closing it, you’ll have until you die to redeem them.

Bonus on the basics (1 question)

To give you more for your money, I like to give you a bonus question even if it doesn’t fit into any of the above topics. It can apply to all cards, and it’s really the most important thing…

Bonus: Is it necessary to always pay the full balance of the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card on each account statement (to reset our account to $0)?

Our infographic summarizing the basics of travel rewards covers the 3 simple rules to follow so that applying for more credit cards improves your credit score.

Important rules (image credit: Flytrippers)

So yes, for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card and all your cards, you should always pay everything on time and in full.

It’s the most basic of basics. It’s not mandatory, but it really doesn’t make sense to pay high interest rates!

If you’re not currently paying everything on time, get your finances under control before you even think about getting new cards. Motivate yourself by thinking about the huge welcome bonuses, like this $1025 one, that you’ll be able to get once you’ve made it a non-negotiable habit to pay everything in full on time every month.
