You are currently viewing 28 travel rewards updates (roundup post)

There’s always plenty of news and promotions in the wonderful world of travel rewards, and there have been even more in November. If you even slightly enjoy earning free travel, I invite you to join the thousands of savvy travelers who have signed up for our free newsletter specifically about travel rewards to never miss anything!

As for any post, you can use the table of contents to navigate to the sections that interest you.

But this time we’re trying something a bit new; we’ve grouped the updates by theme to make it easier for you (there are a lot of them).

Here are the 28 travel rewards updates.

General tips (2 updates)

1. Replay of our monthly live video on travel rewards (best deals of the month + Q&A session)

Every month, we do a live video with 2 parts: a presentation of the best deals to help you choose your next card if you’re due for a big welcome bonus, and a Q&A session to answer all your questions. The replay is always available in the same place afterwards. Don’t miss the December edition, which will be announced soon if you want to be there live.

Here’s the overview:

  • Video on travel rewards for November
    • Replay now available
  • Video on travel rewards for December
    • Live at a date to be announced soon

You can see the November video on our live video replays page.

2. Reminder of the importance of planning your Black Friday and Christmas purchases well to maximize your rewards

It’s such a simple trick that really separates the pros from the amateurs, and it’s important! PLAN all your Christmas gift purchases (and ALL your purchases of the year) well, and make sure to wait for promotions from online shopping portals to get 5% or even more completely free in rewards!!! It makes absolutely no sense to make purchases without taking advantage of promotions!

Portal promotions summary (image credit: Flytrippers)

Here’s the overview:

  • Always using shopping portals is the basics
    • It gives 1% or 2% at least
  • But using them during promotions is better
    • That’s what savvy travelers do
  • It sometimes gives 5% or even more!
    • Almost always on Black Friday and other major events
  • It’s also usually the best time to buy
    • Brands have their best prices
  • It’s so much better than going to the store like in 2005
    • Do everything online and you’ll save time
    • Do everything in advance so you don’t have to do it in December
    • Or if you want to go in store, go… but then order online

You can read more details in our guide to online shopping portals.

3. The best offers for the month of November

As always, the literally most basic thing is to take advantage of welcome bonuses as soon as you’re no longer unlocking a welcome bonus (or welcome bonuses). The best offers of the month are the ones to consider for most travelers.

See the full-size infographic

Here’s the overview:

  • BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard
    • ≈ $1590 in net value
    • Relatively fixed value (more simple type)
    • Gives 2 Canada-Europe flights (roundtrip)
    • Redeemable for certain Porter or Air Transat flights
    • Travel benefits on Porter
  • TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card
    • ≈ $716 in net value
    • Extremely variable value (more lucrative type)
    • Gives 1 Canada-Europe flight in business class (one-way)
    • Redeemable for certain flights from 40+ airlines
    • Travel benefits on Air Canada
  • TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card
    • $1000 in net value
    • Completely fixed value (more simple type)
    • Gives $1000 in guaranteed fixed value
    • Redeemable for almost any travel expense
    • 4 free passes for VIP airport lounges
  • Scotiabank Gold American Express Card

    • Phenomenal earn rate of 5%-6%

You can read more details on our page of the 4 best offers of the month (or our ranking of the best cards with all the subcategories).

4. The record-high offer for points of the more simple type has been extended

The must-have offer for beginners (because it’s the minimum that all travelers should get as a bonus now) was ending on October 31, but has been extended until January 1! So you can still get $875 for any travel expense booked on any site! And you should. It’s the minimum you should get.

  • Perfect for beginners
    • Points redeemable very easily

  • One of the best cards overall
    • Excellent insurance
    • Excellent earn rates

5. Amex now allows you to know if you’ll be approved without impacting your credit score

A very useful feature that has been available in the United States for a long time is now offered in Canada. Amex Bank of Canada, which issues several of the best Canadian credit cards, now allows you to avoid putting in an application for which you would be declined.

New feature (image credit: Amex)

Here’s the overview:

  • You fill out the card application as usual
    • As you should very regularly!
  • Instead of sending it, it tells you right away if you’ll be approved
    • If yes, you can send the application and get the card
    • If not, you avoid an inquiry on your credit file
  • I can’t test it out myself yet, but I will relatively soon
    • I’m already at the 4 Amex card maximum
    • And I already have the extra ones that don’t count towards that total
    • But that will change relatively soon (and we love testing everything)

You can read more details on the Amex page of the best Canadian card overall (on the left under the card image).

6. Annual fee increase for the best Canadian credit card overall

This increase highlights how many people still don’t understand how to count well, sadly. It’s one of the most important things. Of course, it’s a negative change. But objectively, the value of the first year with the welcome bonus is still excellent, and the value of subsequent years doesn’t change much with an increase of $3/month…

American Express Cobalt® Card
American Express Cobalt® Card
Flytrippers Valuation
of Welcome bonus (net value)
≈ $
Rewards: ≈ $900*
Card fee: $191.88 ($15.99/mo.)

for 12 months

Terms and conditions apply. Flytrippers editorial opinion only. Amex is not responsible for maintaining the content on this site. Please click "Apply Now" to see most up-to-date information.

Here’s the overview:

  • The annual fee goes from $155.88 to $191.88
    • That is from $12.99 to $15.99 per month
  • The fee is charged differently depending on your province
    • Fee charged monthly outside Québec
    • Fee charged annually in Québec
  • The value of the first year decreases a bit
    • The welcome bonus decreases from ≈ $744 to ≈ $708
  • The value of other years decreases a bit
    • But very little (and it remains the best card)
    • It doesn’t change the value calculation much
  • It’s one of the rare cards that I keep every year
    • This increase might change the math for me
    • Because I don’t spend a lot OUTSIDE of welcome bonuses
    • The ideal situation is indeed to use all your spending to unlock bonuses
    • Everyone should check the new value based on their own situation
  • Simply redo your calculation with the new number
    • If you assume that Amex points are worth ≈ 1.5¢ (very conservative)
      • You earn ≈ 5.25% more than with other cards
      • So you need to spend $305 per month to make the fee worthwhile
      • Compared to $247 per month before ($58 more)
    • If you assume that Amex points are worth ≈ 2¢ (for business class)
      • You earn ≈ 7% more than with other cards
      • So you need to spend $228 per month to make the fee worthwhile
      • Compared to $186 per month before ($42 more)

You can read more details on our resource page for the Amex Cobalt Card, as with all cards.

7. End of the record-high welcome bonus for precious RBC Avion points

If you prefer points of the more lucrative type, card #2 in the top 4 above was certainly better for beginners, because Aeroplan points are much easier to maximize than RBC Avion points. But this record-high deal for RBC Avion points ends on November 25 and is the only one that gives you access to the world’s best business class, Qatar Airways’ Qsuite! Don’t miss the next increased offer by signing up for our free newsletter!

Promotions for earning and redeeming (7 updates)

8. Last chance for the earning promotions on online shopping portals for Black Friday: 10X points (Aeroplan) or 3X cash back (Rakuten)

The Aeroplan eStore portal is offering 10X points (≈ 15% back) at many merchants until tonight. You actually even get 15X points (≈ 23% back) if you also pay with an Aeroplan credit card. That’s a phenomenal promotion. You get 18X points if you have elite status. There’s even 6X points at Apple, which is rare. Meanwhile, the Rakuten portal is offering 3X cash back at many merchants (and use our link for a $30 welcome bonus).

Here’s the overview:

You can read the details on the Aeroplan eStore and Rakuten websites.

9. Many other Aeroplan earning promotions for Black Friday

Most are not great promotions, but some can be worth it for specific purchases you had to make anyway. Please don’t ever fall for “promotions” to redeem points for gift cards and merchandise, as so many unsuspecting beginners sadly do.

Black Friday promotions (image credit: Air Canada)

Here’s the overview:

  • Bonus of up to 85% (or even 100%) when buying points
    • Rarely recommended (even with a bonus)
  • Earn 3 pts/$ when buying $750+ in Air Canada gift cards
    • Rarely recommended (even with a bonus)
  • 750 bonus points at Starbucks
    • If you haven’t linked your Starbucks Rewards account yet
    • Or 100 bonus points if you already have
  • 25 or 100 bonus points with Uber and Uber Eats
    • Really nothing to write home about
  • Up to 30,000 bonus points with Bell
    • But requires expensive plans
  • Chance to win a free trip with LCBO
    • Only if you live in or near Ontario
  • Discounts on the worst point redemption options
    • Gift cards and merchandise
    • Please do not do this

You can read more details on the Air Canada Black Friday promotions page.

10. Return of the amazing RBC Avion 30% transfer bonus to British Airways

One of the savviest tips is possible again! You can transfer your RBC Avion points to British Airways Avios points and get a 30% bonus for free! In addition to the Avios points already being worth ≈ 50% more (or ≈ 100% more if you use them for business class), now you get 30% more points!!! That’s what I did to travel in the world’s best business class. However, Avios points are among the most difficult to maximize, so you need to be more flexible.

RBC Avion transfer bonus to British Airways (image credit: RBC)

Here’s the overview:

  • 30% transfer bonus
    • Like every year
  • Until December 19
    • It started on November 10
  • Minimum of 10,000 points transferred
    • So 13,000 Avios points received
    • Instead of 10,000 normally
  • You can take advantage even without having RBC Avion points
    • Apply for the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card now
    • You’ll get 35,000 points after the 1st purchase
    • You’ll be able to transfer at least those
    • That will give you 45,500 British Airways Avios points

You can read more details in our post on the transfer bonus promotion (and we’re going to have more content on Avios very soon for those who followed our recommendation to get the record-high offer for the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card that ended November 25).

11. Last chance for discounts on transatlantic flights with the Flying Blue monthly promotion (Amex points transfers)

The Flying Blue program should be included in your strategy, like all airline programs accessible with Canadian credit cards. But it’s not often the most interesting. One of the exceptions is during their monthly promotions, because it allows you to get a bit more value than usual and therefore makes Amex points transfers better (FB has higher taxes/surcharges).

Discounts on transatlantic flight (image credit: Flying Blue)

Here’s the overview:

  • Canada–Europe flights
    • On Air France and/or KLM
    • Certain dates and destinations (as always)
  • Business class for 45,000 FB points
  • Economy class for 18,750 FB points
    • So 25,000 Amex points
    • Better than with Aeroplan
    • From Montréal

You can read more details on the Flying Blue Promo rewards page

12. Return of the Amex Shop Small Offer (but only on Scotiabank cards)

Many miss the great Shop Small freebies, one of the Amex Offers that returned often. It’s back, but only for Amex cards issued by Scotiabank (Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, Scotiabank Platinum Amex Card, Scotiabank American Express Card).

Amex Shop Small Offer (image credit: Amex)

Here’s the overview:

  • Go to the Amex Offers special page for Scotiabank cards
    • Sign up for the offer with 1 click, like for all promos
  • Spend $30 at a participating merchant
    • Taxes INCLUDED (not $30 before taxes)
    • Like with all Amex Offers
  • Get $10 as an automatic credit on your statement
    • A 33% rebate if you maximize
  • Thousands of eligible merchants
  • Offered a maximum of 5 times
    • It must be 5 different merchants

You can read more details on the Amex Offers page for cards issued by Scotiabank.

13. Aeroplan redeeming promotion for hotels and car rentals (probably to avoid)

It’s soooooo simple if you want to maximize the value of Aeroplan points: they should be redeemed ONLY for flights. Not government taxes, not vacation packages, not seat selections… and especially not merchandise. Hotels and car rentals should be avoided too, normally (they’re not flights), and the current promotion doesn’t change that (with a few exceptions).

Hotels and car rentals promotion (image credit: Aeroplan)

Here’s the overview:

  • Discount of 15,000 points
    • By redeeming at least 60,000 points
  • Booking until December 5, 2026
    • Stays at any date
  • With promo code BONVOYAGE
    • Enter when booking
  • Situations where it could be worthwhile
    • By getting as close as possible to the 60,000 points price
    • By combining with the 4th night free benefit
    • By finding a hotel that gives better value
    • By not being good at getting good value with flights

You can read more details in our previous post on the Aeroplan redemption promotion for hotels (it was a different promo, but the principle is the same).

14. Aeroplan to Marriott transfer bonus promotion to avoid

I repeat: Aeroplan points should be redeemed for flights. Like many things in this world that can be complex, many people very often confuse similar concepts with each other: points transfers are THE best redemption of BANK points. But airline and hotel points should rarely be transferred.

Transfer to Marriott (image credit: Aeroplan)

Here’s the overview:

  • Transfer bonus for elite members only
    • Aeroplan elite status (not Marriott)
  • 20% bonus
    • Not worthwhile
    • So imagine without a bonus!
  • Until November 30
    • But it’s really to avoid

You can read more details on the best redemptions of Aeroplan points.

Airline programs (6 updates)

15. New Aeroplan dining partner and 750,000 points giveaway

A potentially interesting new development. Dining partnerships have been an excellent way to earn lots of points in the United States for years, but here, it was absent. Aeroplan just launched a partnership that will be popular for some, but all travelers should at least create a free account to have a chance to win half a million points (or another prize)!

New partnership with DINR (image credit: Aeroplan)

Here’s the overview:

  • Partnership between Aeroplan and DINR
    • App for high-end restaurants
    • Not great for those who like to save
  • Giveaway to win Aeroplan points
    • Open to everyone (easy to participate)
    • Create a free DINR account
  • 3 prizes to win
    • 500,000 points
    • 150,000 points
    • 100,000 points
  • Another offer that gives a $50 gift card
    • If you become a DINR Premium member at $95
    • Instead of being a free member
    • Almost an effective discount of 50% (there are taxes)

You can read more details on the DINR/Aeroplan partnership page.

16. Another new Aeroplan airline partner

Redeeming Aeroplan points on partner airlines is the key to getting better value (but sadly, everyone always redeems them on Air Canada). There’s another new partner, which is obviously a good thing. But it won’t be a particularly useful partner for most travelers, though.

Bearskin Airlines aircraft (image credit: Bearskin Airlines)

Here’s the overview:

  • Bearskin Airlines becomes an Aeroplan partner again
    • Airline with 22 small aircraft
  • Serves Northern Ontario and Winnipeg
    • Not the most popular destinations
  • Gives excellent value
    • Because flights are at the guaranteed fixed prices
    • Set by the Aeroplan award charts
    • Unlike several Canadian partners

You can read more details in our guide on the 40+ Aeroplan partner airlines.

17. New business class seat selection fee at Qatar Airways

Many are very angry, and I understand them, it’s very annoying not to be able to choose a seat for free in business class. Especially on the world’s best business class. But to be consistent, I have to say it makes sense. Some travelers don’t care where they sit and just want any lie-flat seat, and don’t want to pay for a specific seat. It’s logical that others pay more, like for everything else. These fees are why flying has never been cheaper in history (as I discussed in many media interviews last week).

Qsuite lie-flat pod seat on Qatar Airways (photo credit: Andrew D’Amours/Flytrippers)

Here’s the overview:

  • Qatar Airways now charges for seat selection
    • In business class
  • It seems to be around 150 CAD
    • Almost as much as the full flight price (taxes when paying with points)
  • You obviously don’t have to pay
    • Like with all airlines on the planet
    • They’ll assign you a random pod seat for free

You can read more details in my testimonial on Qatar Airways Qsuite business class (and we’re actually preparing a very comprehensive guide on this business class, which will include the details of this new policy).

18. Aeroplan points expiry is suspended for 1 more year (it’s so simple to always avoid it anyway)

It’s kind of fascinating how people are stressed about points expiry, but of course, it’s normal when you just don’t know. There’s no time limit to redeem points (for almost all programs), so points earned today can be used in 20 years. But you often simply need to have activity in your account (which is extremely easy, especially for Aeroplan).

Expiry suspended (crédit image: Flytrippers)

Here’s the overview:

  • You don’t need to do anything until November 2026
    • The temporary pandemic pause has been extended by 1 year
    • But even after that, it’s really not complicated…
  • You just need to have ONE activity in your account
    • For your Aeroplan points not to expire for 18 months
  • Doing one thing every 18 months is really not complicated
    • It’s really the most minimal effort possible
    • If you’re not ready to do that, this might not be for you
    • You just need to be organized (you should be anyway)
  • Lots of things count as activity
    • Earning the slightest point
    • Redeeming the slightest point
      • Always for flights to maximize the value obtained

You can read more details in our comprehensive updated Aeroplan guide soon.

19. Improvements announced regarding the major Aeroplan program changes for 2026

We already told you about the major changes to earning Aeroplan status and Aeroplan points in 2026. Based on member feedback, 2 minor improvements were announced regarding the new system. It’s pretty niche, but we wanted to keep you informed.

Improvement to accrual (image credit: Aeroplan)

Here’s the overview:

  • Points accrual for Star Alliance flights ticketed by Air Canada
    • In the initial announcement, the elite status multiplier only applied to a few airlines
    • Now, the elite status multiplier will apply to all Star Alliance airlines
  • Class bonus for Million Mile recognition
    • In the initial announcement, the current fare class bonus disappeared
    • Now, there will be a seat class bonus instead (PY 125% and J 150%)

You can read more details in our post about the 2026 Aeroplan changes.

20. New Aeroplan redemption option (to avoid)

This is going to be repetitive, sorry. But seeing how many people waste their precious Aeroplan points, it’s better to make it clear. Aeroplan points should be redeemed for flights. There’s a new redemption option announced recently: for cruises. But it’s to avoid (some would say cruises in general too, but here we’re talking about the points value).

New Aeroplan points redemption option (image credit: Aeroplan)

Here’s the overview:

  • Points can now be used for cruises
    • Via the Air Canada Vacations site
  • The value obtained seems pretty terrible
    • Not surprisingly

You can read more details on the best redemptions of Aeroplan points.

Hotel programs (2 updates)

21. Very abrupt end for the Sonder by Marriott collection (hotel-style apartments)

Marriott had announced a partnership with the Sonder brand, which offered apartments with hotel services (a kind of hybrid between Airbnbs and hotels). The Montreal-founded brand wasn’t doing very well financially (their stock chart is atrocious), and the creation of a collection brand within the Marriott program was supposed to save them. That’s not at all what happened.

Lobby with logo (image credit: Sonder)

Here’s the overview:

  • Marriott removed all Sonder from their site on a Sunday
    • And told customers to leave immediately
  • They didn’t even provide an alternative (terrible customer service)
    • Most of the 9000+ hotels offer great service
    • But not their HQ when a problematic situation arises
  • Marriott issued a press release (still on a Sunday)
    • They say they terminated the partnership immediately
    • Due to Sonder’s “default” (without specifying)
  • Sonder then announced its immediate permanent closure
    • Due to financial problems

You can read more details on the Marriott page for the Sonder debacle.

22. The new Marriott Bonvoy hotel brand is now available

On the more positive side, the new hotel brand acquired by Marriott is now available. The citizenM hotel portfolio looks amazing, and it’s now bookable through Marriott. I had always been intrigued by the cool brand, and it’s great that Marriott has acquired it.

citizenM (image credit: Marriott)

Here’s the overview:

  • citizenM was acquired by Marriott
    • It was a popular growing chain
  • The 37 hotels are now bookable
    • Through Marriott
  • It’s a bit like Moxy hotels
    • Well-located centrally
    • Young and vibrant
    • Cool common areas
    • Functional but small rooms
  • But more focused on technology and design
    • More upscale than Moxy

You can read more details on the Marriott page about the citizenM brand.

Bank and other programs (2 updates)

23. AIR MILES Dream and Cash Miles will finally be combined

The worst stupidity in the whole rewards world will finally disappear. It’s the end of the bizarre separation of AIR MILES miles into 2 different currencies, which only served to complicate their program (one that really isn’t good enough to deserve the effort to understand this complexity). There will only be a single AIR MILES currency, as with all other programs.

AIR MILES Dream and Cash Miles will finally be combined (image credit: AIR MILES)

Here’s the overview:

  • AIR MILES Miles will just be AIR MILES Miles
    • No more Dream and Cash currencies
  • Starting January 25, 2026
    • It was about time

You can read more details in our comprehensive updated AIR MILES guide soon.

24. Improvements to Scotiabank cash back cards (great for Chexy)

Pros obviously avoid cash back cards, which are terrible. Welcome bonuses are terrible (and welcome bonuses are THE most important thing), and earn rates are terrible. But there’s only one exception, which is the card that allows you to get a net value of 2.25% cash back on your rent, taxes, duties, etc., thanks to the Chexy bill payment service. And it’s now even better.

    • Also applies to the no-fee card to avoid
  • Multiplier earn rate added to the best card
  • Multiplier earn rates added to the other cards
    • Not worth getting

Lounges and elite status (4 updates)

25. Opening of the first Air Canada Café Lounge in Vancouver (and announcement of a Café in Québec City)

Flytrippers attended the official opening of the Air Canada Café Lounge in Montreal and explained this new concept to you. Last month, we told you that 3 new ones were under construction. The 1st of the 3 just opened in Vancouver, on the domestic side. And a Café Lounge has been announced for Québec City (the only existing lounge there has also temporarily closed).

Air Canada Café Lounge Vancouver (image credit: Air Canada)

Here’s the overview:

  • Lounge opening in Vancouver (YVR)
    • Air Canada Café Lounge
  • Located in the domestic terminal
    • In the C wing
  • Designed for grab-and-go meals and drinks
    • To complement Maple Leaf Lounges
  • Upcoming opening announced for Québec City (YQB)
    • Air Canada Café Lounge
    • Details to follow
    • The Club Med Lounge has closed in the meantime
    • This is in addition to previously announced Cafés

You can read more details in our review of the Air Canada Café Lounge Montreal (domestic).

26. Flying Blue status match promotion to get SkyTeam elite status

We told you about the status match promotion for the oneworld alliance in October (still available), and there’s now one for the SkyTeam alliance that’s very similar (paid and for 12 months) but more restrictive (no Marriott or WestJet status accepted). The Flying Blue program (Air France and KLM) just opened its status match promotion to Canadians.

Status match (image credit: Flying Blue)

Here’s the overview:

  • Flying Blue status match available
    • Silver, Gold, or Platinum; depending on status held
    • Valid for 12 months
  • Gives you status on all 15 SkyTeam airlines
    • Silver = SkyTeam Elite
    • Gold & Platinum = SkyTeam Elite Plus

27. Soft landing offered for those with Marriott Bonvoy elite status

Marriott Bonvoy elite status is the most interesting one for Canadians. The program also has a soft landing policy, which means you’ll drop by a maximum of 1 elite level if you don’t requalify. This has just been officially confirmed for 2026 again.

Here’s the overview:

  • You won’t drop more than 1 level in 2026
    • Regardless of your status actually earned during 2025
  • Let’s say you were Titanium in 2025, but don’t requalify
    • You’ll drop to Platinum for 2026 (March to February 2027)
    • Even if you didn’t even reach Platinum in 2025

You can read more details in our guide about Marriott Bonvoy elite status.

28. Complete overhaul of Hilton Honors elite status (with new Diamond Reserve tier)

Hilton Honors, the other hotel chain program that’s most relevant for Canadians (though really much less than Marriott), announced a complete overhaul of its elite statuses. It’s relevant for everyone who has the Amex Platinum Card or the Amex Business Platinum Card, which gives Hilton Gold elite status automatically.

Here’s the overview:

  • Complete overhaul of Hilton Honors elite status
    • Effective January 1, 2026
  • New top elite status will be created
    • Hilton Diamond Reserve
    • Very logical (Diamond is too easy to reach)
  • Diamond Reserve will require 2 qualifications
    • Either 40 stays OR 80 nights
    • AND US$18,000 in spending in all cases
    • So it’s definitely not for most travelers
  • Qualification thresholds reduced for other levels
    • But the same benefits
    • Great news
  • For example, Diamond will require just 25 stays OR 50 nights
    • For free breakfast, free VIP lounge access, and more

You can read more details in our next roundup post soon (get the Amex Platinum Card in the meantime if you want Hilton Gold status).
